Clarivate Design Experience

Enterprise Design System / Branding

My Role

I work as a lead designer contributing to our corporate design system.

My Responsibilities

I design components meant to be used in many of our products. Every components made starts with a discovery process, design and validation. I gather requirements from many products within the company and review my design solution with the rest of the design council. I then document the design uses of that component for the design system website.

The Result

A design system that meets product needs and unifies the products with a cohesive design language.

Some contributions

Global Header Component

Because our design system is based on Google Material for Angular, we had a good set of base components to start with. I created the first Clarivate specific component, which was a header component meant for all of the products to use. While this component looks simple, we had to consider brand requirements and many navigation requirements from across the products.

Component design documentation

Because the global header component was the first of it’s kind, I also pioneered a process fo writing design documentation needed for each new component.

Design system website redesign

The original design system website was geared towards developers, leaving out documentation or guidance for designers in how to use the components in their products. A big turning point in how the design system operated in the company is when we decided to include design guidance, patterns, and real life product examples to help guide designers.

Discovery: To gain an understanding of the users of the website (designers and developers) I interviewed 7 developers and facilitated a workshop 3 designer were interviewed. All of the findings were analyzed for a findings recommendations and to define the personas and their website tasks.

Design Strategy: A strategy sharing the discovery findings as well as recommending design solutions was presented to the team. This strategy helped us to agree on project goals, deliverables and what the expectations of the website were.

Content Strategy: My role during the design phase was information architect and content strategist. I worked on developing and finalizing the site page structure, as well as put together a spreadsheet to help port content from the old site to the new. It also included identifying needs for new or refreshed content.
